Giving Thanks: And We Matter to God

Happy Thanksgiving!

Let’s take time to reflect in between early shopping, volunteering at the soup kitchen, watching football or second helpings- and let’s notice evidences of God’s awesomeness.

Here’s an ancient Song of Praise and Thanksgiving that we can still “sing” today:

O Eternal, our Lord, Your majestic name is heard throughout the earth;Your magnificent glory shines far above the skies.

From the mouths and souls of infants and toddlers, the most innocent, You have decreed power to stop Your adversaries and quash those who seek revenge.

When I gaze to the skies and meditate on Your creation— on the moon, stars, and all You have made,

I can’t help but wonder why You care about mortals— sons and daughters of men— specks of dust floating about the cosmos.

But You placed the son of man just beneath God and honored him like royalty, crowning him with glory and honor.

You ordained him to govern the works of Your hands, to nurture the offspring of Your divine imagination; You placed everything on earth beneath his feet:

All kinds of domesticated animals, even the wild animals in the fields and forests,

The birds of the sky and the fish of the sea, all the multitudes of living things that travel the currents of the oceans.

O Eternal, our Lord, Your majestic name is heard throughout the earth.

~King David, Psalm 8 [1. Voice Bible. It’s become one of my top  favorite versions for my devotionals! ]

You matter to God. What other encouraging message(s) do you see in this Psalm?

Fill in the Blanks Prayer

Ever heard of “popcorn prayers”?

That’s when someone begins the group prayer by introducing the theme and in no particular order, others add to it with one word. It goes fast or slow while coming from different parts of the room.

Using prayer prompts can help put everyone at ease about praying out loud or teach someone how to talk to God for the first time or could even be used as a guide for journaling.

Here is a variation of the popcorn prayer idea by Doug Kamstra [1. The Praying Church Idea Book]. Give people time to reflect on each phrase and to respond out loud -or it might work best silently if the group is huge (hum…quiet popcorn?).

Either way, give instructions beforehand on which you want the group to do.

Open with a brief prayer, thanking God for the opportunity to pray together.
“God, I thank You for_________
God, I love You because_________
God, I celebrate You because________
God, I need Your_______
God, help me to be more_______
God,thank You for being________”
Close with a brief prayer.

Why not try it this week at your next HoPE meeting or family devotion? Go for out loud if with family and friends. Use this one or adapt your own as The Spirit leads.

Have a wonderful week!

How has using the “popcorn prayer” format helped your prayer meeting? Have you tried using this outline above? When? How has it contributed to your prayer life?
